Cyrus is a spellcaster, by trade, and specializes in illusions and enchantments (with a small splash of divination). Though these aren't inherently dangerous, they allow him to heavily influence someone's mind by altering the senses or thoughts. Of course, none of these spells are a certain to work and can vary in results from person to person. As a general rule anyone with a strong will or a practiced mind will have an easier time trying to resist these spells.
Illusions are an unusual bit. They can never create actual effects and can never truly harm someone. Even though they never cause physical damage, there a few spells that can ravage the mind and senses causing a bit of psychological wounding.
There are two ways for a character to see through an illusion: resist it through will power or disprove the sensory information with empirical facts. No illusion is perfect and has holes in logic. Perhaps a character notices that a clock isn't ticking in time or that there an object is missing a shadow. Cyrus does his best to make them as real as possible, but to make everything flawless is impossible.
When someone sees through an illusion, it appears as a translucent outline (or an soft echoing sound) and easily distinguished from reality. The character can still observe the illusion but aren't affected by it.
Phantasms and Shadow spells are a branch illusion magic that deserve a specific mention. These are the ones that can harm and kill given the right conditions. Both can still be foiled the same way normal illusions are.
Shadow spells are illusions actually constructed from shadow material giving the illusions a semi-real existence. They can imitate bursts of fire or walls of stone, making them some of the most versatile of all spells. But there is a catch; if someone were to realize that it was only a shadow illusion it instantaneously loses almost all it's power. What used to be an inferno becomes only a flare.
Phantasms are entirely based on fear, they are spells meant to invade an individual's mind and show them what they fear most in the world. They could throw someone into a frenzy or torment them with images. These are illusions only observable by those they are cast upon.
Enchantments are a group of magics that are made to tamper with the mind and alter thoughts. These are some of the most cruel spells, turning friend against friend or to force someone into servitude. Fortunately, many of these devastating spells are beyond Cyrus's ability. The most he can do is strongly encourage someone's actions, make himself appear as someone's ally (tricking them into trusting him), or force their will making them something like a zombie.
Those affected by charm or domination spells noticeably act different. Those who are charmed only have small changes in demeanor while those that are dominated are on full auto pilot and act lifeless. These people can be snapped out of the spell with a good jostling.
These spells can be resisted through will power. If the spells were to try and force self harmful activity or make someone harm a loved one, they are instantly released from the spells clutches.
Divination are meant to gather information or offer as warnings. The only intrusive divination Cyrus is able to cast is a spell that grants him the ability to detect surface thoughts. Only reading passing thoughts or feelings; completely incapable of digging any deeper. It also is easily resisted and requires eye contact. Near useless, but worth mentioning.
Before using any of these I will almost always ask permission. This is just kinda just protocol.
